What will be the tile trends for 2020?

As the first month of 2020 comes to a close, what will the next 11 months bring? While we can not predict the future, we can predict what the tile trends will be for 2020 for both the kitchen and bathroom. Some of the trends include natural stone backsplash tile, subway tile and matte finishes.

Kitchen Tile Trends

  • Subway Tile

Even after five years, classic subway tiles remain a popular choice for backsplashes, however homeowners are looking to spice things up in 2020. Instead of the usual 3” x 6” dimensions, subway tiles are being expanded to 4” x 8” or elongated to 3” x 12”. They have started to come in a variety of colors besides white and are being placed in different configurations, not just horizontally.

  • Patterns

Backsplashes are no longer meant to fade into the background in 2020, but will become focal points themselves. They now come in a variety of geometric shapes and patterns with bold colors to draw attention. Even rectangle tiles are placed in a variety of patterns, such as a chevron or herringbone. These tiles can either be small or large, it just depends on personal preference, both make a statement in the kitchen.

  • Natural Stone

Another popular tile trend for 2020 is having a natural stone backsplash tile in a variety of colors, not just white marble. Some homeowners are eliminating tile altogether and extending their natural stone countertops to become backsplashes. This creates a seamless, modern look for the kitchen, but natural stone backsplash tile can add elegance, so there is no wrong choice.

Bathroom Tile Trends

  • Nature

One popular trend for bathroom tiles in 2020 is to release your inner biophilia, which means being drawn to life in nature. This can be done in a variety of ways such as having tile with foliage or using wood tiles as flooring. People are also drawn to using a natural stone backsplash tile for the bathroom as well, especially marble. However, homeowners are moving away from white and looking to pink, green and gray.

  • Dimension

Similar to the kitchen, bathroom tiles are coming in a variety of patterns as well. The most popular for 2020 is predicted to be the hexagon. They add a unique look to any bathroom and come in various sizes, shapes and textures. Hexagon tiles are not the only tiles getting added texture though. Bas-relief tiles or tiles that have been carved into, are becoming a popular trend for this year as well.

  • Matte Finish

Though tiles like Terrazzo and subway tile can come in all sorts of finishes, the most popular for 2020 will be matte finishes. The finish makes the tiles look smooth and can be put anywhere in the bathroom. Tiles with a matte finish are easier to maintain and they do not show wear and tear like glossy tiles do. However, unlike glossy tiles, they do not reflect light but absorb it, so it is important that the bathroom has enough lights.
