Stone finishing options

Polished

A polished natural stone finish is usually the most common. This is what you probably picture when you think of natural stone countertops. The way that the stone is made so shiny is by rubbing it with mechanical diamond pads. This will create a natural polish and enhance the color and veining of your natural stone. 

There are many places that this type of finish will fit in. Some will avoid getting polished natural stone for their countertops because it can scratch or etch easier than other options, but there are ways to prevent and fix that, like repolishing. 

Honed

Honed marble countertops will not be shiny the way that polished ones will. A honed finish means that it will be flatter and more matte, giving the stone a soft and smooth appearance. It will reflect very little light. This may reduce the visibility of natural veining.

A honed finish is a great choice for those who are looking to hide any type of wear and tear. This finish is great for countertops or in places that will be wet often like in a bathroom. A honed finish will not get as slippery when wet as a polished finish does. 

Brushed

A brushed finish is created when tools like wire wheels and brushes are used to create texture in the stone. This will create a smooth, worn-in finish. This type of finish will have the least amount of shine to it and gives off the most casual look. The best place to use this type of finish is on flooring or places that need traction. Because it provides a bit of traction, this will be the least slippery when wet. This finish will also hide scratches and etches the best.
