Update: Options for Polishing Granite

When most people have a choice, they want their countertops to be shiny and beautiful. This is why those who choose a natural stone countertop choose to polish it. It can create a very elegant and luxurious surface that draws a lot of attention when someone enters the room. A common natural stone that looks great when polished is granite!

There are two ways to polish granite. A wet material or a dry material can be used. There is a divide on which method is better because both methods can work well. Let's look at some of the benefits and downfalls of wet vs dry polishing.

  • Dry polishing powder is less expensive than paste.
  • Powder polish is more versatile because it can be used dry or wet.
  • Wearing water resistant clothes and placing plastic sheeting on furniture, cabinets, and walls is important when using wet polish because the process creates excess spray when used with power tools which can cause damage to surrounding materials.
  • Wet polishing keeps the pads cool which prevents them from becoming too hot and wearing down too fast.
  • Wet polishing pads cost less than dry pads.

It is advised to check with the manufacturer of the granite countertops or flooring to see which method of polishing is best for your product. Some may handle certain polishes better than others, and some natural stone may not even need a polish!

Granite polishing powder is also called a stone polishing compound. Powder allows the removal of minor scratches and stains while providing a quick and simple way to create a shiny surface. Use a buff polishing pad on the surface in a consistent circular pattern when using dry polishing powder. If you prefer to use the powder wet then it is advised to use a muslin wheel.

There are many different compounds available for both new and used granite surfaces. When trying to choose a compound it is suggested to take the primary color of the stone into consideration. There are light and dark tones available, so the primary color should be matched to whichever tone matches it best.

Granite polishing creams are typically designed for countertops. Due to the type of light abrasives in the cream, it is best used on a rich stone to create a premium grade finish. Many professionals use a hog’s hair pad or similar material for buffing with polishing creams.

While it is advised to use a skilled professional to polish granite, many people do polish their own granite countertops or surfaces. One main reason this is possible is due to the various premium quality polishing products available on the market. When instructions are followed correctly the result should look like the work of a skilled professional. This is appealing to consumers due to the expense of labor when hiring a professional. Again, using a skilled professional guarantees excellent results, so if you are not sure of the process, it is best to hire a professional.
